Queen Elizabeth National park is the most visited and most popular national park In Uganda. It is located in the western part of Uganda. It was established in 1952 and it crosses 4 districts namely Kasese, Kamwenge, Rubinzi and Rukungiri.
The park can be accessed by road transport that is from Kampala – Mweya via Mbarara which is approximately 420km OR Kampala – Mweya via Fort portal which is approximately 410 kilometers.
What makes Queen Elizabeth National park a top tourist destination is its unique tree climbing lions, its richness in wild life that includes the big 4 animals (minus the Rhinos) and these can be spotted during guided natural walk, game drives or boat cruise on Kazinga channel.
Kazinga channel
Kazinga channel is a small river like channel connecting 2 lakes that is Lake George in north east and Lake Edward from south west of Queen Elizabeth National park. Kazinga channel is known for its famous boat cruise and it is always done from 2pm to 5pm local time, also especial boat cruise is done at 9Am. It starts from Mweya peninsular and this gives a great opportunity to the tourists to spot most of the animals since they all come down to the channel to take water along the river bank. Animals like elephants, lions, buffalos, baboons, hippopotamus, crocodiles, leopards and many others. What makes this boat cruise more interesting is a very small peninsular where birds gather in middle of the channel and Bird lovers go an extra mile to enjoy this boat cruise as they spot many kinds of birds like the Black Crake, the Knob-billed Duck, the African Jacana, the Fish Eagle, The long tailed Cormorants, The White-faced Whistling, the Spur-winged Plovers, the Pied kingfishers, The Pink and white backed Pelicans, The Yellow Backed Weavers, the Squacca Heron, the Water-Thick Knee and others
Isasha Sector
Tree climbing lion are very rare wild animals in the whole world and found in only 2 destinations that is in Lake Manyara national park found in southern part of Tanzania and Isasha section found in southern part of Queen Elizabeth here in Uganda. These unique tree climbing lions are the major tourist attraction and the major reason why visitors like Queen Elizabeth national park and the same reason why Queen Elizabeth National Park is ranked to be the most visited national park in Uganda. Tourists are advised to be in 4×4 wheel drive vehicle since the route to the Ishasha sector most of the times is muddy.
Kyambura Gorge Wild life Reserve
It is found in eastern part of Queen Elizabeth National park. Researchers say that it is a home of 6 chimpanzees which are all charming. But still there other primates found in this place like red tailed monkeys, white and black Monkeys, giant forest hogs and these can be spotted during natural walks.
Kyambura gorge is also a home of a few bird species like the Falcons, the Fin foot, the Blue headbee-eater, The Martial Eagles, the Papyrus tailed lark, the African Broadbill and others
Maramagambo Forest
Maramagambo Forest is part of Queen Elizabeth National park which is well known for the big bat cave found there but still it is a home of some wildlife like bush babies, giant forest hogs, red tailed monkeys, baboons and many others.
KIkorongo Women community
It is a place outside the park were women are involved in beautiful dances and music plus art and craft making. These women teach tourists how to weave baskets, bowls and women belts. They sell their crafts and they get income for their day to day living
Lake Katwe - eruption crater
Located in the north of Mweya peninsular in Queen Elizabeth National park. Eruption is the explosion of steam and lava from volcanos which this is believed to have happened about 8,000-10,000 years ago. Out of this eruption 3 crater lakes were formed namely Katwe crater Lake found in Queen Elizabeth national park, Ndali – Kasenda crater lake found near Kibale National park and Bunyaraguru crater lake that is in Kichamba escarpment. While on your Katwe Crater Lake drive that is around 27kilometers you will spot some Elephants and buffaloes. Also on this drive you will be in position to see the beautiful scenery of the Katwe Crater Lake, Kazinga channel, Lake George and Lake Edward d, Kitagata hot springs which is a unique place because of its hot water and the activities done from this place for example people come and boil eggs from this place you cannot miss to visit the lake Katwe that extracts salt, you will see all these from this same drive.
